Activity Descriptions

English Classes:

These well-loved English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes are run in conjuction with Govanhill Free Church.

The women who come to The Well’s  classes are comfortable being in women’s only classes, and learning English is made fun for them.  A Play Worker keeps children entertained as the women learn and refreshments are provided.

Chai & Chat:

Chai and Chat is a social group for women. There is always Chai (Tea), usually a craft of some sort, and lots and lots of chat. Women have the opportunity both to learn new and teach each other skills,  chat have a cup of tea and make new friends. The group helps with community integration and combats social isolation as women from different cultures get to know one another.  As ever children are welcome, but they must be supervised by an adult.

Job Seeking Support:

The rules for claiming  Job Seeker’s Allowance mean that  people must now show evidence of doing Job Searches online.  Quite a challenge when English is not your first language and you have no clue how use a computer!  We are very grateful to be able to offer three sessions a week to support some of the most vulnerable people in Govanhill and beyond, fulfil this part of their commitment.

We have helped people set up email and universal job match accounts.  We have taught them how to log on and identify suitable jobs, apply for jobs or submit CVs.

As you can imagine this can be a long slow process, over many weeks and months – but it’s well worth it.  Our philosophy is that it is better to teach a man to fish than to just catch fish for him.

It was lovely recently to see a Pakistani woman (who had learned to use the computer at The Well) offer to teach one of our Slovakian Roma women just how to do the job searches!

The patience of the men who run these sessions is exemplary!

‘Bubbles’ Female and Toddler Group:

For cultural reasons this group is just for women and toddlers (sorry men!)

Bubbles is staffed by a mixture of paid and voluntary staff.  There is usually plenty of fun free play time with lots of toys, a craft time, a snack time and a short ‘Bookbug’ song and storytelling session incorporated into the hour and a half.

The Women who come appreciate the safe place for them and their children to interact and play together, and will often discuss important issues with the staff over a cup of tea during snack time.
