English Classes:

Currently The Well in conjunction with Govanhill Free Church and hosted by them, runs English Classes for women on a Tuesday morning – during term time.

Although the classes are only held once a week, they are much loved and well attended. The classes are free.  Fiona heads up the women’s class and is assisted by a team of volunteer teachers. Chrissie supervises the children and makes sure everyone is fed and watered.

The Men’s class is held on a Wednesday morning. Both groups are made up of people with varying ability in English and because Govanhill Free Church has several qualified TESOL trained teachers, the different abilities can all be catered for.   The women who come to The Well’s classes are comfortable being in women’s only classes – and learning English is made fun for them.

Chai & Chat Group:

Tuesday afternoon is Chai & Chat Time in The Well.  A time for women to have an  activity just for them. There is always Chai (Tea) usually a craft of some sort, and lots and lots of chat. As ever children are welcome, but supervised by their  mums. We have all been encouraged to see the friendship  The Chai & Chat Group is headed up by Penny, Heather, Jan & Sarah.

The women have the opportunity both to learn new and teach each other skills,  chat have a cup of tea and make new friends.

Job Seeking Support:

The rules for claiming  Job Seeker’s Allowance mean that  people must now show evidence of doing Job Searches online.  Quite a challenge when English is not your first language and you have no clue how use a computer!  We are very grateful to be able to offer 3 sessions a week to support some of the most vulnerable folks in Govanhill and beyond, fulfil this part of their commitment.

We have helped people set up email and universal job match accounts.  We have taught them how to log on and identify suitable jobs, apply for jobs or submit CVs.

As you can imagine this can be a long slow process, over many weeks and months – but it’s well worth it.  We have worked on the philosophy that it is better to teach a man to fish than to just catch fish for him.

It was lovely recently to see a Pakistani woman (who had learned to use the computer at The Well) offer to teach one of our Slovakian Roma women just how to do the job searches!

Dougie, Iain and Tom are responsible for the sessions and their patience is exemplary!

Bubbles – Mother & Toddler Group:

No men allowed in our weekly Mother & Toddler Group!  It is held in Govanhill Free Church on a Wednesday afternoon from 1.00 to 2.30.  Lots of fun, games, songs & healthy treats enjoyed by all who come.

Bubbles is staffed by two sessional workers, paid for by BBC Children in Need, several volunteers and normally some parent helpers.

The Women who come appreciate the safe place for them and their children, and will often discuss important issues with the staff.
