Amna* one of regular service users – indeed she’s probably been a regular since the day The Well opened – was forced to learn basic computer skills, so that she could do job searches online.
This was a massive challenge and I know that several of our younger volunteers (Helen, Faye and latterly Ruth) spent hours and hours helping her and teaching her and going over the same things again and again and again.
Yesterday I received this text message from a volunteer:
“Amna is meeting Mrs Bencova* at the Job Centre to show her how to look for a job on their computers. How about that for a change in person?”
I love that so much on every level – the pupil has become a teacher AND crossed into a different culture to help someone.
*names changed.
