Paper Airplanes

The Unexpected Gift of a Paper Airplane

Last week, our waiting room was a bit livelier than usual. With schools out (in service day), more children came with their parents to the Advice Centre. And as anyone knows, waiting can be tough, especially for children. But what unfolded next was a brilliant reminder of the quiet power of human kindness.

One of our regular visitors, who came to support a friend, noticed the number of kids in the waiting room. Without a moment’s hesitation, they pulled out puzzles and colouring sheets; items we have available, but often go unused without a gentle nudge. The visitor began offering them around, transforming potential boredom into welcome distractions.

Then came the paper airplanes. Soon, a spontaneous competition was underway to see whose plane could soar the furthest. This simple activity sparked joy, turning a potentially stressful wait into a space filled with smiles and playful energy.

This visitor’s kindness embodied the principle of “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” By stepping into the shoes of those waiting and responding with such thoughtfulness, they reminded us that noticing the needs around us and offering what we can, no matter how small it seems, creates powerful change. Sometimes, the most unexpected gifts, like a folded paper airplane, can make the biggest difference.

Thank you to our visitor for bringing the kindness and smiles😎
